DOWNLOAD PATTERN

The soft, rounded shoulder line of a kimono sleeve paired with a cocoon silhouette that drops toward the back is a shape often associated with the golden age of haute couture. But what exactly creates that sense of volume and drape toward the back?

In this coat, that effect is achieved by intentionally lengthening the back body. Since the side seams must match between the front and back pieces, the extra length is added by making the back armhole longer than the front. This subtle shift allows the back to visually fall away, creating that signature cocoon-like shape.

From the side view, you’ll also notice that the shoulder seam curves dramatically toward the back—another technique to emphasize the dropped-back effect. This becomes even clearer when you look at the flat pattern of the front body; the shoulder seam placement tells the story.
